Christ, the last time I posted on this blog it was exactly a year and one day ago, but thats alright because since then blogging has become about as fashionable and socially accepted as becoming a priest or tattooing NECRO in big letters on your leg.

Needless to say the night ended up an epic shambles and its not very fun playing the Fraggle Rock theme to an empty club.

So 2007 was probably my (if not our whole crew's) least musically productive year yet. We did get some hip and happening stuff done though:

January started as the year was to go on, with a failed attempt at a second album-a-day by the Pinkos. Another of those quite possibly in the pipelines though, even if just to kickstart us back into action...

February seemed to be one of those months where drinking etc. took precedence over, well, anything else really. Although it did produce this Shindig classic.

Clearly we were just as busy in March.

April: work starts on the DJ Dano & B-Koz album, and we had some fun on a rare lovely hot day in Letterkenny filming this:

DJ DANO & B-KOZ: Evidence is Real

In May Dano & B-Koz got a wee bit of coverage on Blogorrah, and Piers Morning's debut was launched to a salivating public.

June was all about the rap & production team as word of the first Shindig gig in a slow age came through.

July was the big release and live show month - a whale of a time was had by all in the Orchard, and Universal recently sold out of copies of the album, so thanks everyone!

In August, it was back to the grind of going out far too often for our own health, with occasional musical endeavours.

September arrives, more promises of new material are made and broken and:

Felix from Hot Chip comes to Letterkenny with a crate of thumping minimal, backed by our own DJ Dano and some incredibly annoying crowd noises

Apparently nothing happened in October, while we relocated once again to Belfast, Dublin, etc.

November? "Hey look, here's what we're doing (also known as sweet fuck all)."

And finally, in December just past, probably more drinking than all year (for me anyway) and Dano provides the B-Koz album for download for those who couldn't get their hands on a hard copy.

And so to 2008 then. Immediate plans: looks like myself and Diarmaid are gonna work on some new music before January is out, with the current aim of an EP or similarly small collection of songs.

The Pinkos will hopefully reunite and get that sophomore album-a-day done, finally. The Super Eight Kids might have a wee tinker in the studio, and myself and Fionn and Dano will hopefully get some stuff done in our Belfast "studio" (dining room). I'm also gonna tidy up and clear out my hard drive of all the crap tunes I've accumulated in the past few years and start afresh when my new interface and headphones arrive.

2007 was mostly a year of broken musical promises (for me anyway) - here's to 2008 being a damn-sight more prolific. Happy new year ya filthy animals!

Tugboat Willy:promised an EP of sorts here a while back (see post below) so consider his hat well and truly ate.
Dont worry though, been hearing his new choons thumping loudly in his room the past few weeks and I've a feeling Shindig's golden boy will deliver another red hot CD for yall to vibe with.

DJ Dano:production wise, im not up to much these days, but Im gonna un-pack that shitty old compaq thats been sitting in my garage since september and start work on my solo material. shindig "studios" (okay, the study room in my house) has been relocated to my garage (by moving the computer out there).Im also in talks with Shindig newest Mc, Gloves to do a track.
I'll be hopefully be kicking ass and chewing bubblegum at a "battle" of the DJ's comp at the belfast students union on the 22nd.

Update! from the man himself- "I've had my new PC for a week, so I'm trying to figure out how to recover all my old shit off my fucked laptop. Expect a fuller update on the crappy, ill-kempt messy blog over the next week or two ..."

Also I've been shitting it trying to figure out what I'm gonna do after Xmas when Frankie and Harvey move out ... Could be back in LK before you can say Jack Robinson.

Oddy Knocky:In between learning from polish people how to treat women and crafting pizza's at traditional Italian eatery Domino's, Fionn can be found educating us on just how good The Band are. (very)

So last week I wrote: ...you can expect the new Tugboat Willy EP to be floating about here, ready and willing to be downloaded for free, by Friday the 21st of this month at the latest - I pwomise!

Alright, alright, the promise has been broken - I didn't get this ready in time. I have been working hard on my summer Tugboat material over the past week but to "release" it (as it were) now wouldn't do it justice. Still gotta decide whether I have decent enough vocals for the tracks I want vocals on, and it still needs tinkering, still needs love.

So I'm transferring all this shit onto my laptop and bringing the work with me to Belfast. It still is coming soon, in the near future indeed - just not quite yet... In the meantime, do check out DJ Dano's fine new mix just below!

While I'd hoped to get a whole album's worth of material done over the summer months, things (working + the small issue of partying at any given opportunity) conspired against me, as things tend to do. So it's boiled down to a handful of brand-spanking new tracks which I'm gonna work furiously on in the next 2 weeks before the return to college - hopefully with the aid of a few collaborators I drunkenly asked to join me (if I don't get back to you soon, definitely next time!)

I'm pretty happy the way this batch is working out and you can expect the new Tugboat Willy EP to be floating about here, ready and willing to be downloaded for free, by Friday the 21st of this month at the latest - I pwomise!

Evening all. Time for (I think) the 13th post in a row with "DJ Dano & B-Koz" in the title.

Now that the dust has settled on the gig, we've started getting our team of remixers working away on a few of the tracks. The first results are from elusive audio messer Kick Acid (*cough* DJ Dano *cough*), and yours truly.

Check out Kick Acid's "Club Sandwich edit" of "Everybody Let's Go" over on the DJ Dano and B-Koz Bebo page.

My remix is of trusty old "Evidence is Real". This was meant to go on sale as a single at the show/in Universal, but fate has let them sit gathering dust in my backpack. 20 hard copies will go to our nearest and dearest. Probably. You can have your own hard copy if you'd like by lobbing the tunes on a CD and printing out the slightly racy cover (designed by DJ Dano of course).

What a cracking weekend it was. I'm still absolutely shattered. Big thankz to all the coves who showed up. Easily the best night all summer. Big shouts to Daithi for the blistering party set at the end.

My poor Kaoss pad, RIP mister power plug, you will be replaced. The album's available now from Universal, though pick up the pace, it's gonna be a limited enough run of copies.

Next on the agenda is a video for "Hot Summer Joint", and expect to see some remix action (anybody interested in putting out a remix?)

Tugboat here. So we had another decent practice for the upcoming live show today, powered by the assorted amps scattered around DJ Dano's garage.

The setup:

-loops in Ableton on my laptop, going through the Kaoss controlled by Dano;
-Fionn on lead guitar;
-B-Koz and DJ Dano on the mics.

The yet-to-be seen setup (with a week and a half to go, yes indeed):

-Diarmo thumping away on another guitar;
-Brian on another laptop with the visuals.

I had B-koz over to the studio last week to get some more writing done on this album, which hopefully (almost definately) will be out at some point this summer, (two possible tracks for the album are over two years old).
We got two new songs done in a day, (which is good considering most days we get half a song done).
I was messing around on the tables and played B-koz a Gladys knight track which I cut up and he turned into a hot summer jam that would make Will Smith blush.
The other track was from a hot loop Tugboat made on his laptop with all those fancy bleepy Vst's or whatever the fuck. B-koz dropped gold over it.
Hmm...things to do:

get a proper live show organised

album title (I wanted to use "Fear of a white planet" as mcDevitt suggested yonks ago. too novelty?.)

1) DJ Dano and B-Koz got drunk and stoopid in Letterkenny on Saturday. I don't know whether they made any music or not.

2) Messy Angelo has climbed out of his creative slump and is perhaps more productive than ever.

The Wreck of the SS Pinkos

I for one found today to be a bit of an old fashioned chore ... Sickness of mine combined with the general hung-over nature of the crew left us all a lot less than coordinated. It also sapped a great deal of our creativity and enthusiasm. HOW and EVER, there were some tracks which I reckon would stand up to inclusion on an album in a day project, if we had managed to get enough material together...

The first track, laid down as Tuggers and Oddy slumbered and myself and Dano thought about what to do, was The Pinkos Are Snoozing (sort of an appropriate title for the amount of graft we put in today, n'est pas?) ...

The second one is It'll Never Work, which ironically was one of the few tracks which did seem to work ... I'll probably take it as a demo and work a finalised version onto the new Messy album... if I get lyrics the title will probably change.

The third one is My Apple Juice (again, only really a working title), which for various reasons may be worked again into some Shindig release or other (it's Tugboat and Oddy's work, and sexy work I think too ...) but yeah ... we just couldn't get going today. Some day in the coming months we might get a Shindig Pinkos album up, but unfortunately the absolute earliest outlook seems to be summer. Til then, it'll be solo projects and nothing but ...

The Return

Yes indeed! After nigh-on a year, the Pinkos return to mess up your earspace with another attempt at creating an entire album of music in one single 24-hour period, for the Crapart Album-a-Day project, as well as for our own enjoyment.

Slightly changed line-up this time around: last year's Messy and myself remain, but our dear man Brian is unable to join us (for the moment at least). However, the ranks have been swelled by the addition of DJ Dano/Kick Acid (don't know which moniker he's going for this time) and Lord Oddy of Knockyshire.

Having started at around 13:30, we're about 3 and a quarter hours in so far. Morale isn't great at the moment, to be honest - hangovers (story of our life) and lack of any actual physical instruments are getting us down. However, we're doing what we can with some records, VSTs and our imagination. Three tunes basically rolling, but incomplete...

POST THE SECOND: THE RETURN CONTINUES, UNABATED!!!
The Pinkos, despite a rocky start, are continuing to push and shove the envelope in a very rude and unmannerly fashion, now we have FOUR tunes completed (nearly). Well, one finished, one well under way and two ... probably the best I can say is "prospectively under way". The time you say? Well, it's pushing 6. That's the bad news, we're a little behind schedule. The good news is that we're about to get a shot in the arm as the Oddiest of Knockies is away home to fetch us a guitar and perhaps some other unnamed treats. Good TIMES!

POST THE THIRD: THE RETURN CONTINUES, MASTURBATED!!!.
Album in a day my hole, more like lay about all day eating food, playing Wii, dry humping a teddy and occasionally faffing about on the computer.
Morale has reached an all time low, with me at least. Tugboat remains optimistic, but he is a fool.
I made the cover out of lego and peddled some sub par tunes.
I dont think we are even going to drink.THIS HAS BEEN A WASTE OF MY TIME.
Other than that, things are going smoothly,I like the songs we have made.
They sound like ringtones.

20:46 - My my, 7 and a bit hours go by quickly. Ignore Dano, he's only a wee sulker. Anyway, Fionn's just this minute landed with the much-needed equipment - thank fucking Christ. We're about 7 tunes up now. Not all of them gold yet, but developable (not a word, says spellchecker), certainly.

HALFWAY POINT!!! Posting at you in the 7th Way:
Messy here to inform and titillate, despite being sick as an old larch ... So it's just about 1.45, and we've made some reasonable headway. Some 9 tunes have been crafted to greater or lesser degrees, totalling roughly 17 minutes yet to be confirmed, we have some mixing and editing to do before they're at their final length ...) and we still have almost 12 hours left! This does not count sleeping time and the time me and Fionn will have to pretend to be asleep but keep a vigilant clenching of our buttocks lest the Boat try and dock therein ere he goes off to the land of nod... Anyway, it's a somewhat similar mix to last year, but there's a different overall taste coming off this one. Here's to the album dropping in just under 12 hours, promptly and without delay...

I NEED A TOWEL
03:49 - Bollocks. Yeah, I think I'm gonna have to throw it in folks. My heart is not only not in it, it's nowhere fucking near it. This project and my heart have been hanging out in different area codes most of the day, only occasionally meeting up for a brief, slightly awkward chat. I dunno. It started badly, I perked up a bit after a while, until about 7 o'clock - but then it levelled out to an even keel of sub-par sloppiness and has remained there since.

I like the beverageware. It's Xcellent.

Some of the ideas we've got going are interesting enough and all, but we're going about it the wrong way entirely. So, for your information...

Notes on how NOT to approach an Album-a-Day (or any music project for that matter):
1. By getting ridiculously drunk the night before and having a whomper of a hangover and/or just being knackered for the day of action.
2. By neglecting to make arrangements for any/all of the equipment you're expecting to use.
3. By spending more time sitting around/playing computer games/watching TV than actually making (or even thinking about) any music.
4. By working separately when you're in a group of people. We might as well have just tried doing 4 individual albums, the way we were working apart from each other and the way the tunes have turned out. Two/four heads are better than one.
5. By trying to do big, long looping things that repeat over and over*. The thing is, I've gotten used to doing long, repeating tracks with my forays into techno and other electronic music production (made all the more obvious here by the overwhelming presence of four-to-the-floor beats). For that, you definitely need more than a day for each track so you can perfect all the small little bits. More spontaneous, one-off ideas probably work better in the context of an Album-a-Day. I know they did last time around.

*I could be proven wrong on that one, but I don't think it works as well as doing short, one-off random bits and pieces.

Oh well. Better luck next time :(

I Should Stop Quitting Everything*

Yes friends, after a thrilling 9-day run, Trabby de la Schwank's assault on all that is good in music has come to a spluttering halt. For posterity:

TRABBY DE LA SCHWANK - Friends and Neighbours (DELETED! For ever and ever!)

Perhaps Trabby too closely scaled the dizzying heights and too thoroughly plumbed the stomach-wrenching lows of avant-garde expressionism, leading to an implosion of musical thought, or perhaps this whole idea was just really stupid and pointless: who can say?

Onwards and Upwards
To the positives, and as we approach the end of the second month of Summer 2006 (!), what in the Dickens is going down, Shindig-wise?

1. The new solo B-Koz material really is shaping up to be something special. With DJ Dano as chief architect and myself providing a healthy portion of the building materials - to be joined by more of Letterkenny's finest musical contractors in due course, no doubt - all we're waiting for is Da Koz's blistering raps to furnish the thing. (Didn't know where I was going with that but it worked out quite nicely, I thought.)

2. As soon as the B-Koz project gets wrapped up, new October Country/Beesley and Super Eight Kids material will hopefully be sent to the refineries of Shindig's various production facilities.

3. I think Diarmo's never-ending quest for noisy pop orgasm is currently on hiatus for retooling. Fix your god damn lappy D.

4. You'll have noticed the Fionnster has joined us. If you haven't already, download his typically mellow cover of the Flaming Lips' "Race for the Prize", via this post here!

5. Kick Acid has another 200BPM megathon in the works, this time exploring the theme of electronic gaming.

6. As for me, now that my upstart alter-ego Trabby has said all he needs to say (see above), my nearest and dearest Tugboat can come back to the fore. Expect new material sometime before the summer is out. (And/or after.)

But for now, take it proper easy!

It started out with just that sorta dirty bassline thing you hear, but came to life when I accidentally added a drum'n'bass beat. Its my birthday this arriving monday the 13th and to milk the rollocks out of it-any folk around belfast can celebrate this rubbish event by goin to see maggot and dj Xain of Goldie Lookin Chain fame on thursday night with us.
Then, on friday some refreshments and light entertainment in the form of Durning dressed as a mexican wrestler will be at my house which will then proceed to much larking about in the Fubar.Diarmiad, you better have your saggy arse home for it.

Back to that gubbins about the kick Acid thing I mentioned previously. Apperently it's in a function room of sorts in the Radisson hotel Letterkenny on the first of April.Its some school related dance thing with a band called Atlus whom will be performing before me.
Its open for anyone to go but due to it probably being a younger crowd than us lot and a bizarrely hollywood related dress code, I believe the interest wont stretch beyond a severly intoxicated tugboat and brian.

hope everything is top notch back in the land of fifty head butts. things have been really good for me over here recently, ive finally got back into my art work after one and a half whole years of being a lazy degenerate. recently ive been drawing dead boys, condoms and pregnancy tests and have been revelling in the colours pink, light brown and most of all baby blue....... spaff!

im generally really excited about everything at the minet most of all drawing and music, i dont know about you guys but, has music ever been this healthy? yesterday i finally got my hands on The Knife's silent shout album. it sounds like nothing ive ever heard before and the silent shout video is the sickist thing since the ebola virus rocked african dance floors in the mid ninties, the second track neverland is also an unearthly pleasure to listen to alone in your room with the lights out while looking at the six oclock traffic. ive made a concerted effort to finally get my hands on the global goon album family glue which i, as tuggers and dano know, have been whining on about for ages now so i orderded it. a recent discovery i made aswell was rex the dog who i suspect tuggers might know because of his boner for kompact and their bleepy din. i, despite my best efforts, have been liking death from above 1979, only because i swear i made music just like that when i was 15, with my bass and a boss distortion pedal, its like looking at a fashion photographers interpritation of my early years, where im sexy and class looking. ive also on the basis of hearing just one track been liking battles who made guitar muisic sound interesting for a minet, and frankie sparo who sounds like four tet playing with messy angelo, and messy is being really boozy and funny (by the way i love you diarmo), i found him on the song of the silent land compilation on constilation.

anyway ive been lovin the art work posted recently dano, its bootylicious, the one with the hands tugged me off this morning. oh yeah the album in a day was so pure and so class that i shouted both pure and class out loud when i heard it. i hav'nt really been writing much music recently, bits of pieces here and there. i really want to buy a synthisizer and play some of my songs on that to see what they sound like, but money will stop me from doing that.

An album in a day!

13.10 - Tugboat Willy with the word on the street
We live in exciting times, ladies and gentlemen... Messy Angelo has joined me up in Super-Amazing Studios for an attempt to make a whole goddamn album in a day. So, under the project name of The Pinkos we have to produce either 20 mins/30 songs worth of music in the next, well, 24 hours. (Check out the Album-a-Day homepage for more info.) Messy has given the optimistic prediction of 4 hours for us to get this thing done. We'll see.

14.15 - Messy's Update
Tensions are running high, and despite Tugboat's obvious desire to cave my skull in with a guitar and feast on the juicey insides, we must continue with this album in a day project. We've completed the bare bones of our first tune in just about an hour and it's quite a nice little number, so hopefully the brain eating can be staved off til we get the next few tunes down. Ableton was wanky for some reason today so we switched back to the old favourite, Acid. Now it's my turn to get behind the production table and start a tune... (that's how we're doing this, writing and producing a song each in turn, with help from the other). Anyway, we gots to get back to work, so I'll type at y'all real soon.

15.25 - Tugger's Report
A tiring hour later we've got another one basically down... This one's pret-ty hot, we think. Our plan of using the TV to find names for our songs (we turn it on and the first thing someone says, we use as the title) has proven successful so far: "We Want Her Home", "At One Time in France" and "Kids Go Free" are what we've got so far. Hotte boogie woogie. Keep it peeled, and hopefully we'll have an album for you in the next 22 hours!

16.30 - Gobs of Wisdom, from Messy
We've been hard at it in Super Amazing Studios, and we've crafted our Bravery tribute song "Him Being Here is not a Problem" into near perfection over the past hour. The album has a sort of guiding principle keeping the songs together it would seem, on listening back to the songs. This is good, because I was sure it would sound like two seperate albums mashed together. Anyway, we're away to crap in a bowl, then stick it in the oven, and keep on serving you guys the hot shit that results. Back in an hour or so ...

17.45 - Tuggle my wuggle
Another slice on the pan: "Sometimes it's Hard to Make It Look Easy". And y'know something? There's great truth in that title. This is a difficult undertaking, and incredibly tiring, but we estimate we're gonna get this mutha done by 5a.m. When we start consuming alcohol in a few hours, it's gonna make it either a lot easier or a lot harder, but certainly more fun... Onwards and upwards.

21.26 - Uh oh, somebody made a Mess(y Angelo type song)
Anyway, we've had our dinner break, during which I ate some goddamn tastey and devil benighted hot curry, and we've had the addition of artist/guitarist Brian Mc Devitt (operating under his Bunnyhop moniker? I haven't asked) so things are looking fairly sexy for this album in a day. It's eight hours in and we have 6 solidly well developed songs clocking in at over 12 minutes, so we really only need maybe four more and some vocals to be home free. Artists corner over by Brian is also looking creatively fertile, so expect some artbabies for the cover to be born kicking and screaming anytime soon. BACK TO WORK!

22.11 - Tug(boat) on my Willy please
While Sir Messy d'Angelo fannies about creating his newest opus, I'll sketch Super-Amazing studios as it is right now. Brian is trying to shine a laser in our eyes; I'm typing this; and Diarmaid is writing a new song. The barrel-wielding sailor from the Dutch Gold cans has joined us and is now our muse/slavemaster.

23.04 - Heaven must be missing an (Messy) Angel(o)
Another hour, another post. It's been ten hours since we undertook this crazy mission, and yet another slovenly, sleepy guitar track has been laid down, to be accompanied by vocals later on in the sexy sexy night. Brian hates me. He keeps yelling abuse at me. I wet myself one time he did, I'm away to change now in a minute. I'm gonna just say I have to use the bathroom and hope no-one notices I come back with Tugboat's pants on. The lads went on an expidition to the shops, and came back with a bounty of Doritos, Pringles and a few extra Dutch. It will be a majestic night. Keep on truckin.

Alright. So, tunes-wise, we've nearly reached our target. We've done NINE songs. Some are good. Some are not so good. Others are excellent. Others still don't quite do what we wanted them to. And a last portion. Meanwhile, Brian's artwork is coming on like a big old load of smen. Whatever that is.

03:47 - The Tao of the Pinkos/Messy
Lifted directly from the Tao of Steve, a godawful shitty film that's currently (dis)gracing channel 4 at the moment. Anyway, it's 14 hours in and we've finally laid down all the tracks that I think we're going to lay down, not including any extra tweaking we may do in post-production, and it's sounding hot enough. Roll on the vocals, which may well be tough to handle, but we are the men for the job ... Fuck yo. It's gonna be hot. We portly slackers rock.

04.48 - Tugjobs 'r' Us
'Post-production', they call it. 'Dicking around til it sounds half-decent and making up lyrics on the spot', we call it. Currently we have some lyrics written but that shit isn't commited to 'tape'. In other news, Brian's a homo. Eight and a half hours left, and we don't intend to use all of 'em. Keep it foolish.

13.56 - All the everybody
Fantastically, WE ARE FINISHED! Ten utterly decent tunes and some fine-ass artwork, all completed in (just about) 24 hours, baby. Sadly, we did cave in to the sleep monster at one point, for 4 hefty hours, but we felt it was necessary. We'd probably have ended up doing some silly things to the music otherwise. We added all our amazing vocals this morning and "post-produced" The Long Wind - as we've called this venture - all while eating toast. To celebrate, we'll have a nice wee sleep this afternoon and party party party the night away at our launch party! Tonight! Expect the mp3s real soon. Peace out peeps.
